Brunswick

“Brunswick is a film about landscape change, told through the personal story of a farmer’s lifelong connection to his now-threatened land.” Taking place in Brunswick, New York the film “weaves together the plight of Sanford Bonesteel, an aging farmer in his 90s, with the dynamics of small-town politics as a residential development is planned on Sanford’s former land… It is a story both specific to Brunswick and yet recognizable to rural communities all over the United States.”

Our dear friend and frequent B3nson collaborator Matthew Carefully wrote the original score for …

Book Talk! Mr. Fox by Helen Oyeyemi

Mr. Fox is indeed a book, written by Helen Oyeyemi.  It’s a book about a writer, his muse, and his wife.  His muse is angry at him because he kills off all of the women in his stories.  His wife is angry with him because he is in love with his muse.  And he is basically too self-centered to really feel much beyond annoyance at the women in his life.  I know this sounds good, but it gets better: the muse is just a figment of his imagination! You can …

As has been written about countless times by every for some reason still surprised journalist who shows up to Kabul in their first week here, the city has a fairly active nightlife. This nightlife, however, is almost completely limited to expats. No Afghans allowed in the vast majority of these swanky restaurants, and the few that do open their doors to everyone are out of most natives’ price range.

Which is one of several reasons I was intrigued when I was invited to a show on Thursday where three Afghan rock …

518 Mixtape Track 1: Rockets and Bluelights

We here at B3nson have a tendency to focus on what is currently happening in the capital region music scene and sometimes we even focus on what is going to be happening in the capital region music scene. This is for good reason: there’s a lot of awesome stuff going on out there and there’s always a lot of awesome stuff just over the horizon. But, sometime’s, it’s good to take a step back from all of that and take a look at some things that have already happened. Maybe they happened before you were here, maybe they happened and you missed them. Maybe you were there and need a little trip down Memory Lane. That’s what this column is all about. We’ve had some great talents here in Albany, and sometimes they get overlooked or sometimes they go on to do other things. But with so many good stories to tell and so many great songs floating around it seems like a shame not to share them with people.

Introducing: The Parlor

…You may be more familiar with them as We are Jeneric. Their newly released single “Tear Down the Coastline” is the first off of the band’s forthcoming album Our Day in the Sun. This music video is the first in a series of ocean themed music videos Jen put together, made up of footage entirely of 8mm film found in the old family farmhouse where Jen and Eric live. (That little girl dancing in the waves…that’s Jen’s mom).

Our Day in the Sun is the fourth album written and recorded by …

Duck

My sincerest apologies, I forgot to post something two weeks ago. So to make up for it, I will ramble about ducks for a few sentences. You’re welcome.
Over dinner last night, I had a conversation with some non-Americans (both a Frenchman and a Canadian, but no French Canadians) about eating ducks. They were tremendously surprised I’d never done so, as it is apparently their traditional holiday meal. The only opportunity I would have had, though, that I can think of, would be with Chinese food. And there are so many …

Sort Of A Craft Night?

Last night was Wednesday night and as everyone is probably aware of by now, Wednesday nights are supposed to be craft nights. However, my partner in crafting had to work so instead of crafting, last evening found me eating (vegetarian) Shepherd’s Pie and watching old episodes of The Office with a couple of my roommates. That is, until Dan showed up with a roll of aluminum foil…
Dan wants to make a bunch of paper maché squirrels to be used as decorations at this year’s Funsgiving show. Step 1 in the …

Official Rules of the Funsgiving Beard-Off

Alright Chicks and Chaps,
This year, we’re going to be doing things a little differently for Funsgiving. In the past we’ve had standard best beard competition, which usually consists of write-ins and funny predetermined categories and whatnot. This usually goes over pretty well. USUALLY.
The contest will be refereed by a panel of unknown (even to myself) judges, with the exception of the final Best in Show category, which will be audience favorite. Cheers and claps, kids.
Here’s the part you’re all keen on; the categories.
1. Civil War Era – This is pretty …

Bonus Book Talk! This Is Not Your City

On the cover of This is Not Your City: Stories, Ron Carlson is quoted as saying, “Caitlin Horrocks is a stunning writer and these stories mark a brilliant debut.” I usually ignore book blurbs for two reasons: First, the writers providing the quote can simply make it up.  I’ve wondered on several occasions if the person giving the blurb has even read the book, or if they’re simply fulfilling a favor, or maybe even lending their name out for some extra cash.  Second, the quotes are often attributed to a …
